The University is always improving its cycling facilities. There are many secure bicycle shelters available on campus for use by staff and postgraduates, in addition to the numerous clusters of Sheffield stands. Once your card is activated by the car park office, you will have access to ALL the cycle shelters on campus. Many University buildings also have shower facilities available for cyclists.
The Environmental Sustainability team have put together an interactive google map with all of the active travel facilities on campus (includes cycle shelters, showers and cycle repair stands & pumps).
Staff can save money on the purchase of bicycles and/or accessories via the Cycle to Work scheme.
A flexible car park permit is available for staff who cycle but also need to drive to the University some of the time. Flexible permits allows 21 car park entries per card and cost £26.25.
There are a number of ways that you can get cycle training as someone living, working or studying in Manchester.
UMBUG has its very own qualified instructor. Kathy England is a qualified National Standard Cycle Instructor and a Breeze Ride Leader. She is more than happy to carry out 1:1 confidence building training as well as offering local route tips. To contact Kathy, drop her an email: kathy.england@manchester.ac.uk.
Free cycle training (usually £60 per session) is also available for all those who live, work or study in Manchester through the Freewheeling project, run by Bike Right! The training adheres to national standards and the 4 levels cater for complete beginners to experienced riders. We have had really good feedback from all those that have taken part and bikes can even be supplied if you don’t have one. Taking part is highly recommended.
Transport for Greater Manchester offers free cycle training to anyone who lives, works or studies in Greater Manchester so anyone at the University can take part. Whether it’s been years since you’ve been on a bike, or you’re a regular cyclist and would like some more advanced training, there’s a course to suit your needs.
UMBUG buddies are experienced cyclists working at the University who are willing to share their cycling knowledge and experience. You can contact a buddy for advice, support or even a guided cycle along safe routes to the Oxford Road Corridor. We have buddies all across Manchester from Altrincham to Bury to Old Trafford to Stockport and further afield.
